🍪 Cookie Crumb
That was her name.
When I joined Lightspeed (later bought by Bell+Howell in late 1994) I was in for a culture shock.
⛪ I was a naïve, straight-laced, #conservative, #church-going kid, one year out of college.
🏍 Our customers (and some of our employees) were #motorcycle enthusiasts who didn't look like me at all. #Tattoos, leather jackets, #beards, foul language (before all of this became mainstream). The horror!!!
Never in my wildest dreams would I consider associating with these kinds of people. I was so judgmental! I thought, "These people are sinners!"
My mentor, Hal Ethington, could tell I was a freaked out fish out of water. He pulled me aside and said, "You're going to LOVE these people!"
🍪 He then told me the story of Cookie Crumb.
As I recall, she went by the nickname Cookie, and later married a guy with the last name Crumb.
Yup.😄
She was larger than life. Opinionated. Spoke whatever was on her mind.
👨🏫 Hal had her in a week-long class held at our offices near the #SaltLakeCity International Airport.
During a break, Hal walked outside. There he saw Cookie and some other folks there for the #training, cigarettes in hand.
As he approached Cookie, she pointed at the signs posted on the door and said:
❗No Smoking!
❗No Soliciting!
❗A girl can't have any fun in this town!!!
😂 I burst out laughing when Hal told me this story.
And he was right - I fell in love with these people.
They had some of the most amazing stories. And although they had a common love for motorcycles (so much that they made a career out of it) they were an incredibly diverse bunch.
I remain profoundly grateful for the opportunity I was given to work with so many wonderful people, who opened my eyes to the inherent goodness in us all.
